Tanka in English: A Tanka Bibliography

This bibliography was prepared in early 2001 and printed copies were disseminated to all members of the Tanka Society of America that year. No edits have been made to update this content for online presentation, except to insert macrons for some Japanese names and terms, correct an obvious typo, and apply a few minor typographic or cosmetic refinements. Links provided may no longer be accurate. Some publications listed may contain tanka but not be wholly or mostly tanka. The text presented here may differ slightly from the printed text sent to TSA members in additional ways than the aforementioned updates. See also William J. The following bibliography attempts to provide a resource for writers, translators, and scholars interested in English-language tanka; however, while many of the books listed are excellent collections of poetry and/or criticism, this list is intended only as a reference source and not as a recommendation of any particular text. Given the length of this bibliography, a few notes on the organization are in order.

The bibliography is structured alphabetically by author, follows MLA format, and is divided into two sections. The first section contains collections of tanka either written in English or translated into English. Some of these books also contain other forms of poetry, illustrations, and useful discussions of the history and formal qualities of tanka. The second section lists books that are primarily biographical, critical, and/or historical in nature but that also include discussions about, or selections of, tanka.

Because of the number of entries, certain omissions were necessary. Books published through December 31, 2000 have been included. Theses, dissertations, and broadsides have been excluded. Complete translations of the Man’yōshū and certain other early Japanese anthologies, as well as selected translations designed to represent these collections, have been omitted. The study of these collections is so prolific that it could sustain an entire bibliography devoted solely to its own translations and scholarship. Texts that focus on a particular poet or that contain some poems from these collections, however, have been included.

Because so many chapbooks of tanka are currently unavailable, I have relied on writers, translators, and publishers of tanka to alert me to titles not in my own tanka library or listed in library databases and to classify these titles as either creative or critical collections. I am grateful to the many people who responded to my calls for titles. Additional thanks are due to Tom Clausen, Cherie Hunter Day, David Rice, and Michael Dylan Welch for sending lists of their tanka libraries and/or lists of tanka books they felt should be included in this bibliography.
